What happens when a middle-aged professionally successful woman, mother of two, decides to shed her fears, live her truth and come out gay in India?
It was a story that both intrigued and fascinated the media. This was not your average coming out story. India had only just recently decriminalized consensual sexual conduct between adults of the same sex and it still has a long way to go. Homophobia is prevalent in India and discussions of LGBT issues have been inhibited by the fact that sexuality in any form is rarely discussed openly
As a woman raised in a traditional Indian family in Mumbai, Raga followed social conditioning; married, had twins, moved overseas, excelled at her career, tried hard to make her marriage work, but eventually chose to live her truth.
With her truth came deep stories of pain, anguish, abuse, a sharp blade being held over her head in the night by her own mother and being ostracized from everything she knew and loved.
Raga chronicled aspects of this journey in her debut book, ‘Untold Lies’ and became one of India’s most talked about authors in 2019. Her story was quickly picked up by the media and since then Raga has been invited to share her story and views on many various live, print and online platforms.
Her second, yet to be released book has now been commissioned by the well-known filmmaker, Onir, to be made into a film. It is a romantic comedy that has drawn inspiration and aspects of Ragas story.
Raga is a sought-after speaker such subjects as ‘Coming out as gay in India,’ ‘Living in a Modern family’, ‘Diversity’, LGBT, as well as her core profession ‘Building a Personal Brand’ and ‘Doing Business in India’
Raga divides her time between London, Mumbai and New Zealand and considers all three her home.
Raga can present in English or Hinglish.
