In July 1999 during the Kargil war
Major Devendar Pal Singh Was "Declared Dead" when first brought into an
Army Hospital. It was by a stroke of luck that one doctor who was present on
the spot refused to give up on him and managed to resuscitate him. After He
eventually survived, and underwent several surgeries, but his leg had to be
Fourteen years later Major Singh is
now revered as India's first amputee marathon runner, dubbed the ‘Indian Blade
After being fitted with his artificial
leg he took up all the challenges that life has thrown his way, and went on to
become not only India’s first Blade Runner
but an advocate for other amputees and war veterans.
In 2011, Maj Singh started a group,
“The Challenging Ones” (TCO). A registered trust, TCO is a group of Indian
amputees, where he share’s his story and helps change attitudes to convert, the
challenged into The Challengers, as he christened them.
Ever increasing members of TCO at
present has 900 Challengers from all over India.
In just 3 yrs, TCO has proudly made
around 100 challengers participate in various running events. This is the first
time such a group has started in the history of India. Maj Singh aspires to increase
this number many fold and make shift in perception of society towards Ability
To date Maj Singh has run 18 half
marathons improving his timing from 3 hrs 40 mins to an incredible 2 hrs 10
